Charley & Sydney - ride buddies
The Churchville Carnival... when I was growing up THIS was the carnival to beat all carnivals. This is where we went to see all of our friends in the summer and run around and ride all the rides when I was younger. As I became a teenager, it's where you went to walk around with your friends and hang out. When I became an adult it was like my high school reunion each year. I could see a good many of my classmates at the Churchville carnival with their kids or spouses or live in person. It was fun, it was wholesome, it was a good time. I can still remember my Mommaw and Noot & Dick Harlow sitting over by the trailer at the bathrooms, just watching the crowd. There would be bingo in the pavilion beside of them. There was beef BBQ, funnel cakes and all things in between. I remember Tammy A. running the cake wheel (she still does) the ring toss for a glass that someone donated and the infamous dunk tank. I even sat in the dunk tank one year, what was I thinking?!?!?! It was so fun! I went to other carnivals of course, I remember one year my dad took us to the Craigsville carnival and I saw Travis Tritt in concert. It seemed every small town had a carnival back in the day. Now, not many do; at least not like they used too. Garrett can remember when Middlebrook had their carnival. That was one that I never attended though. Hometown carnivals just have a nostalgia about them. I remember riding the Farris wheel with Wes Acord when we were teenagers and so many more good memories walking around with my friends. The parade used to be on Friday night and people would start setting their chairs out early that morning before work. We always sat where my Grandma Nellie lived in the apartment in the back of the old store on the corner of Buffalo Gap Hwy. We even had specific seats, LOL.
I've taken all of my children to the Churchville carnival in their childhood. It's my high school reunion every year remember?! I am so grateful that I get to raise my children in small town USA. (I'm singing the Justin Moore song in my head now.) After a night of Country nights and carnival lights, the children were all tired and had a good nights sleep. Do you remember going to carnivals when you were a child? Can't you hear the sounds of people screaming, the scrambler spinning them around until they were dizzy. Can you see yourself on the Octopus (that was my favorite!) If you close your eyes, you can hear the carnival sounds! Until next year...
Wishing you sunny skies and green pastures,
McKession
